Setting Your Starting Cash Balance Accurately

Why the starting cash balance matters and how to calculate and enter it correctly.

Why it matters

MoniePilot calculates current cash as: starting balance plus all income minus all expenses. If the starting balance is wrong, every cash balance and runway figure on the dashboard will be off by exactly that amount.

How to calculate it

Check your bank balance on the date of your earliest transaction in MoniePilot. Subtract any outstanding checks or pending card transactions not yet reflected. Enter this figure in Settings as your starting cash balance.

Updating it later

You can update the starting cash balance at any time in Settings. All dashboard metrics and forecasts recalculate immediately. If you sync against a bank statement monthly, adjusting this figure is the easiest way to correct any accumulated drift.
